Whistleblower

A whistleblower is a term that is used to describe an employee, past employee, government authority, or member of a business organization that reports misconduct that has occurred within a company, corporation, or business.  People who report misconduct as dubbed whistleblowers because they alert appropriate people of unethical or wrongful conduct within a company.

When a person decides to report misconduct, he/she will usually do so because the misconduct violates business best practices, ethical code, regulations, or even the law.   Commonly reported misconduct includes, but is not limited to:

  • fraud
  • accounting fraud
  • tax evasion
  • safety violations
  • health violations
  • insider trading
  • public interest violations
  • corruption

Los Angeles Whistleblower Lawyers

Often times, employees, past employees, government authorities, or business members will not report misconduct because they are fearful of losing their jobs.  No one wants to be shunned by their company or have their job security and financial security placed in jeopardy.  Those who do report misconduct risk losing their positions and risk being singled out by their co-workers as a whistleblower.  This makes doing the right thing very difficult.  Still, many people simply will not tolerate misconduct and choose to report their company's wrongful behaviors, despite the fact that they may be fired.

Those who are fired for being whistleblowers can take legal action against their employers, as employment law does not allow for employers to terminate employees for reporting unethical misconduct.  After an employee has been terminated due to being labeled as a whistleblower, it is advisable that he/she meet with a skilled Los Angeles employment law attorney, like the experienced attorneys at Employment Lawyer's Group.  At Employment Lawyer's Group, we fight to protect our clients' rights while obtaining the best outcome possible for their individual cases.
